Toyota introduces hydrogen burners at its Japan plants

Toyota will be using the very first general-purpose hydrogen burners at its factories and industrial plants in Japan in a bid to reduce dangerous emissions.
Previously, hydrogen burners produced dangerous levels of nitrous oxide due to reactions between hydrogen and oxygen. The new burner will separate the two elements and lower concentration of oxygen. It will reduce nitrous-oxygen emissions and completely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions.
Hydrogen burners are already being used at Toyota’s Honsha plant. It plans to replace 1,000 natural gas burners across its Japanese plants with the new burners.
It has plans to gradually introduce the hydrogen burners at other plants too.
Previously, the company had challenged itself to eliminate CO2 emissions at its plants, adding to Japan’s environmental goals of eliminating non-electric cars by 2050.
If this technology is adopted by other companies, the effect would be widespread for the environment. (Samaa)

Wao Get Ready To Buy SAMSUNG FOLDABLE SMARTPHONE

Samsung will release its new foldable smartphone within the first half of next year, its mobile business chief has said.
After years of rumors and speculation, the foldable phone, which is a tablet when it is fully opened and becomes a smartphone when closed, was revealed during the annual Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday and Thursday.
It uses a new display technology called Infinity Flex Display that allows users to open and close the device a countless number of times without degradation.
“We can’t confirm the date but will release (the foldable phone) within the first half of next year,” Koh Dong-jin, president of IT & Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics, said in a press briefing held in San Francisco.
“The first batch to be delivered will be at least 1 million, and the company is set to produce more if it’s well-received in the market.”
After meeting with Google CEO Sundar Pichai two months ago, Samsung has formed a task force to create the effective mobile user experience on the Android platform and unveiled the prototype to developers so they can make software specifically for its devices, Koh said.
“We have overcome several obstacles, including making folding lines invisible,” Koh said. “We only need to come up with details of the user interface.”
Samsung plans to release Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, along with a foldable lineup every year in selective markets, the tech company said.
The new device will be hitting the market at a time when Samsung’s handset sales have been slowing in major markets amid tougher competition with Apple in the high-end market and Chinese rivals in the lower-end segment.(samaa News)

Dating apps using artificial intelligence

Forget swiping through endless profiles. Dating apps are using artificial intelligence to suggest where to go on a first date, recommend what to say and even find a partner who looks like your favorite celebrity.
Until recently smartphone dating apps — such as Tinder which lets you see in real time who is available and “swipe” if you wish to meet someone — left it up to users to ask someone out and then make the date go well.
But to fight growing fatigue from searching through profiles in vain, the online dating sector is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help arrange meetings in real life and act as a dating coach.
These new uses for AI — the science of programming computers to reproduce human processes like thinking and decision making — by dating apps were highlighted at the four-day Web Summit which wraps up Thursday in Lisbon.
Online dating pioneer eHarmony announced it is developing an AI-enabled feature which nudges users to suggest meeting in person after they have been chatting in the app for a while.
“There is a lot of activity on dating apps but by and large there is not a lot of dates,” eHarmony CEO Grant Langston told the annual tech gathering.
“Guys don’t know how to ask, it’s astounding really how many people need help and we think we can do that in an automated way.”
British dating app Loveflutter plans to use AI to analyse chats between its users to determine their compatibility and suggest when they should meet.
“We will ping a message saying ‘You are getting along really well, why don’t you go on your first date’,” said Loveflutter co-founder Daigo Smith.
Loveflutter already suggests places to go on a first date that are equidistant from both people’s homes using information from Foursquare, an app that helps smartphone users find nearby restaurants, bars and clubs.
“It kind of takes the pressure off organising that first date,” said Smith.
Tinder founder Sean Rad said AI will “create better user experiences” and predicted iPhone’s Siri Voice assistant would in the future act as a matchmaker.
An entirely voice operated dating app called AIMM which uses AI to mirror a human matchmaking service is already being tested in Denver where it has about 1,000 users.
When you open the app, a soothing voice asks questions about what you like to do on a date or where you would like to travel.
It then suggests suitable matches based on your personality. Once you have picked one you would like to meet, the app tells you about them.
After several days the app will help set up a time for a phone call between you and your match — and give advice for your first date based on what it knows about the other person.
“It will say things like ‘based on her personality inclination she is a traditional person, I would recommend dinner and a walk’,” said Kevin Teman, the app’s developer.
The app also reminds you to ask questions “about the things that are important to you” during the date, he added.
After the date, the app checks in with both people to see how it went and recommend whether they should continue to see each other or keep looking.
Teman hopes to make it available across the United States early next year.
Badoo, a London-based dating app, is now using AI and facial recognition technology to let users find a match that looks like anyone at all, including their ex or celebrity crush.
Users can upload a picture of someone and the app will find lookalikes among Badoo’s more than 400 million users worldwide.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone and singer Beyonce are the most searched for celebrities globally since Badoo introduced the feature — dubbed Lookalikes — last year.
However not everyone is convinced that AI can aid the search for love.
Among the doubters at the Web Summit was UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said he was “a little bit skeptical” it could help “people chose their soul mates”.
“I’m very happy I have chosen my soulmate by traditional methods,” said the former Portuguese prime minister, who is married to a Lisbon city Councillor, in his opening address to the gathering on Monday. (samaa News)

Apple iPhone 5G releasing

As wireless carriers prepare for 5G connectivity, the next generation of cellular networking that promises to bring faster download speeds to consumers, hardware manufacturers are also getting ready. One such manufacturer is Apple and a new report suggests that it will release its 5G phone in 2020.
The FCC granted Apple approval to experiment with 5G technology last year, laying the groundwork for a 5G phone down the road, reported The Verge. A report in Fast Company cites “a source with knowledge of Apple’s plans,” who says that the phone will be released in 2020.
The report also notes that the company plans to use Intel’s 8161 5G modem chip, although there are still some technical issues around heat dissipation that need to be resolved. Apple has reportedly also been chatting with MediaTek to supply the chips as a “Plan B.”
Apple is currently using Intel for the modems in its 2018 phone lineup, but it’s reportedly not going to use the company’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips for the 2020 model, as Apple could be the “main volume driver” for its modem.
At the time, Intel told The Verge that its “5G customer engagements and road map have not changed for 2018 through 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects.” (Samaa)

New iPad Pro will be available in stores from Wednesday, November 7

faster than most portable computers

Apple announced a new iPad Pro with an extremely narrow bezel, Face ID and some software solutions to compensate for the lack of a home button.
The iPad Pro has more in common with the MacBook Pro than with the $329 iPad. The company claims that the A12X Bionic processor makes the iPad Pro faster than 92% of portable computers in the market. Apple’s new iPad Pro, which was announced on Tuesday, has a processor that’s nearly as fast as high-end laptops, according to an early Geekbench score, which tests processor speeds.
The iPad Pro’s speed score is not too far behind a current-generation 15-inch MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i7 processor earns, as pointed out by MacRumors.
Meanwhile, the USB-C port makes it easier to connect cameras, 5K monitors, musical instruments and other accessories. The limitations imposed by the old lightning port are now gone.
The MacBook costs $2,799 versus the starting price for an 11-inch iPad Pro which is $799. Along with the iPad pro, Apple has also announced a second-generation Apple Pencil which magnetically attaches to the iPad Pro and wirelessly charges at the same time.
A new touch sensor has been built into the Apple Pencil that detects taps, introducing an entirely new way to interact within apps. The new Smart Keyboard Folio features a streamlined design that’s adjustable for added versatility.
The new iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio will be available to order and will be in stores starting Wednesday, November 7.(News)

Phone has a rear selfie screen

It may come as a surprise for some that Nubia has launched its dual-screen flagship smartphone without a front camera. It comes with a 6.26 inch FHD plus LCD that covers almost the whole phone in screen except for the thin bezel and doesn’t have a front camera.
The Nubia X has two cameras at the back and a secondary OLED screen that allows users to take selfies using the two 16MP and 24MP cameras. You can look at yourself on the rear screen while taking the picture.
Not just this, but Nubia also reads user’s ethnicity, age, skin tone and facial features through AI to suggest the right kind of bokeh and beautification options. The AI software in Nubia has also been trained with 4,000 scenes which will allow it to optimise images.
There is one-touch capacity on each side on the bezel that serves as the home and back button along with allowing users to switch screen. Nubia comes with three-level blue light filter for eyesight protection and better sleep quality.
It also has two models that come with a physical blue light filter baked in the back glass cover and costs an extra $14.
The secondary OLED screen can also be used as two extra buttons for gaming purposes. Other than this, the Android 8.1 phone is almost like any other standard flagship phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 along with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (without microSD expansion option), a 3,800mAh battery (with Quick Charge 3.0) and dual Nano SIM slots tucked inside an aluminum frame.
The phone is currently priced at $470 with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model and reaches $620 for 8GB RAM, 256Gb storage and blue light glass filter.
